An ancient seabed rises and folds into a gently sloping north facing hillside. A duplex soil of sandy loam on sandy clay with iron rich sandstone in the deeper layers, offers a well drained, sun drenched slope for vinis Vinifera ( European grape vine ) to put down its deep roots to look for water and find minerals and nutrients for its annual gift of small ripe berries. It is a temperate climate where the important late ripening occurs in the autumn, a particularly fine time of year in this part of Southern Victoria.
The land was found and purchased in 1982 after an extensive search for a promising vineyard site. Five acres (2 ha) were planted in 1983 and the first wines were made in 1986. Since then, a further 7 Acres (3 ha) have been planted in 1987 and 1994. The original small rammed earth winery has been upgraded but wine making continues in a small scale, hands on, labour intensive manner.
We produce wines mainly from Chardonnay and Pinot Noir at three levels in a hierarchy of regional, subregional and individual vineyard wines.

The Moorooduc. |
In our opinion the Derril Road vineyard is a very special site, deserving a wine of its own to express its unique character and the meticulous attention we give the vines. This wine represents the highest quality we are able to produce, regardless of cost and effort. It is only sourced from the best of the Derril Road fruit and by necessity is made in very limited quantities. This wine is called `The Moorooduc’ in recognition of it being the definitive Moorooduc Estate wine from the first vineyard planted in this part of the Mornington Peninsula.
Detailed production notes are available.
